With more than 8,000 residents, Wahpeton proves it’s not simply a historically rich community with picturesque landscape, but it’s also one with a bright future ahead. Centralized in the Western flyway, it has both spectacular water-foul hunting ( home of the World’s Largest Catfish “Wahpper”) and capital from prosperous farmlands.
This diversified city also features the Bois de Sioux Golf Course with nine holes in North Dakota and nine in Minnesota.
Johathan Carver first explored the area in 1767 on a mission from a British Major to find the Northwest passage, the assumed waterwat to the Orient many believed existed.
More than one hundred years later, the first post office was built and the town’s name became Chahinkapa, Native American for “end of the woods.” In 1873 it was later changed to Wahpeton meaning “Leaf Village.” Wahpeton’s Red River Valley has earned its reputation as one of the richest agricultural band in the nation.
