Moving proves a major transition for anyone, regardless of whether you’re in the process of relocating to Jamestown’s scenic landscape or are lucky enough to already live in the peaceful city. For your convenience, we’ve compiled a list of professional services that are essential in any move and will help your transition flow smoother.
Moving on a weekday means that banks, utilities and other offices are open.
If you order labels with your new address printed, it will make the address change process much easier!
Choose one notebook as your log, and keep all of your moving notes in it.
Enter in your log your utility service dates. For local moves, you may want to leave the utilities on at the old address so you can go back and clean up after your move.
Begin boxing some things each day as soon as you have a moving date chosen.
If you have to clean your carpets, rent a shampooer when you rent your truck or make moving arrangements with movers.
Use a permanent marker to label each box with the contents and destination. It will make it very easy to unload the truck and place each box in the proper location.
Be sure to think ahead about your Pets, if moving locally you might want to have them stay with a friend for the day.
Don't forget to change your driver's license, auto registration and tags.
One month before you move ...
Get a form from the Post Office to fill out with your forwarding information and change of address.
Call your moving company to arrange the move, or reserve your truck rental.
Make any airline, car rental or hotel reservations.
Transfer your gym or club memberships.
Ask for your medical and dental records and arrange for prescription transfers.
Check to see if your bank has a branch here and if not, go ahead and set up your local banks accounts.
Begin to use all of the food currently in your refigerator and cabinets so there is less to pack.
A few weeks before moving ...
Change your utilities to your new address.
Make sure that the electric company, waste management, cable and internet, telephone, cell phone, water, magazines and newspapers services have your change of address.
Confirm your moving date time with those who are coming to help you move.
Confirm any travel reservations.
Have your rugs cleaned and wrapped for moving.
If you are changing banks, don't forget to close your old bank accounts and have your funds transfered to your new bank. Be sure to cancel any automatic drafts from the old account and set them up with your new account.
Check with your insurance company to ensure your homeowners or renters policy will cover you through the move.
Go ahead and defrost your freezer and clean out your refrigerator.
On moving day ...
Check your attic, garage, all closets, drawers and shelves to make sure you have everything packed.
Any important papers or jewelery should be carried by hand or ship securely.
